Bildungsroman

Definition:

A Bildungsroman is a novel of development, which is sometimes referred to as a coming of age story. The Bildungsroman is a novel of education.

The term emerged in German literary criticism during the late 18th century. The novel usually involves the "coming of age," maturation, and/or development of the main character. This development may take place through a sexual or social encounters.

Some emamples of Bildungsromans: Charles Dickens's David Copperfield, Henry Fielding's Tom Jones (1749), Johann Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, and Samuel Butler's The Way of All Flesh.
